ruth weiss at Monroe

On June 15, 2016, ruth weiss gave a wonderful performance accompanied by Doug O’Connor (bass), Rent Romus (sax), and Hal Davis (percussion) at Monroe, 473 Broadway—formerly the location of the Jazz Workshop, which rose to prominence in the North Beach jazz scene of the ’50s. ruth was new in town, and had just moved into a room right around the corner at 1010 Montgomery. Out digging the scene, she approached the Jazz Workshop, which charged a $1 cover. She didn’t have $1. So she was handed a tray, and told she could work waiting tables in order to see the show.

This is the first time she returned to that space since the days of her youth—this time as the headliner.
