The ’49 Hudson Jack Kerouac made famous in On The Road was an engineering marvel for its time. That’s why it was the car of choice for many famous race car drivers of that era and one other very famous driver—Neal Cassady. Seeing as most of the Beats were students when they met one another, we think students could use a break from worrying about their wallet, and concentrating on ideas that matter. Student memberships are $35 a year because former Columbia University student Jack Kerouac was 35 years old when On the Road was published.

Everything happened in 1957. On the Road was published on September 5, 1957. Lawrence Ferlinghetti was acquitted of obscenity charges for “HOWL” on October 3, 1957. The Russians launched Sputnik (which led to the term Beatnik) on October 4, 1957. Now you can become a member of The Beat Museum for only $57 a year.
