Lenore Kandel (1932-2009) was a member of the Beat Generation, best known for The Love Book, a 4-poem pamphlet which was declared obscene in 1966 and seized from both City Lights Books and The Psychedelic Shop. Kandel was also one of the key speakers at the Human Be-in in 1967, along with Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, and Michael McClure. The character ‘Romana Swartz’ in Kerouac’s Big Sur is based on Kandel, and is the girlfriend of ‘Dave Wain’ (Lew Welch) in the book.
