In 1974, Charles Bukowski and Steve Richmond collaborated on an anti-war themed publication called The Earth Rose in Santa Monica, California. Steve Richmond was a prolific poet and artist in his own right, and a connoisseur and collector of rare books, records—and powerful, illicit psychotropics. Such were his chemical proclivities that his family wanted nothing to do with him, and Bukowski seemed his only friend. The Santa Monica police were always watching him. So when the first (and only) issue of The Earth Rose appeared, with “FUCK HATE” set in big, bold type on the cover, they promptly arrested Richmond. “Smut peddler jailed” read the newspaper headline the next day.
