Jack Kerouac Alley runs between the City Lights bookshop on one side, and Vesuvio Cafe on the other, connecting Columbus Avenue with Grant Ave. and Chinatown. Legend has it that Kerouac could often be found in the alley, either nursing a bottle after last call, or sleeping it off after a wild night at Vesuvio. Today, Jack Kerouac Alley remains a beloved fixture of North Beach’s colorful Bohemian past.
