In 1951, Ed White, a friend of Kerouac suggested that he “sketch in the streets like a painter but with words.” The following year, Kerouac began writing spontaneous prose poem “sketches” in small notebooks that he kept in the breast pockets of his shirts. For two years, he recorded observations, and meditations as he traveled across America and Mexico. In 1957, Kerouac took the handwritten sketch notebooks he had created, and typed them into a manuscript called Book of Sketches.
