Among the Beat Generation’s greatest contributions to American literature was a reinvigoration of poetry as an auditory experience. This exhibition included recordings from Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Kenneth Rexroth’s live readings at The Cellar, performances by Lord Buckley, Brother Antoninus’ The Savagery of Love, Allen Ginsberg’s First Blues, and featured an extremely rare copy of Jack Kerouac and Steve Allen’s collaboration, Poetry for the Beat Generation pressed by Dot Records—one of only a handful that escaped destruction when Dot’s owner decided it wasn’t “clean family entertainment.”
